What to wear for your photos

Choosing what to wear for photos can be a headache!

Finding those perfect outfits is easier with a little guidance and doesn’t necessarily mean buying new clothes, unless of course you want to! Here are 10 tips to guide you.

Some tips on what to wear:

  1. Co-ordinate, don’t match. Pick colours that go together but aren’t all the same. It’s best to stick with 3 -4 colours and dress around with any combination of neutrals.

  2. Add small patterns, textures and layers as this can add beautiful depth to your photos.

  3. Only put one person in a pattern, whether that’s floral, polka dots or stripes. You want the main focus of the photos to be the connection and interactions with your family, not your clothes.

  4. Choose different textures such as lace, denim, corduroy, knits etc

  5. Avoid logo’s and slogans to enhance the timeless feel to your photos.

  6. Don’t go heavy on bright white or dark colours such as dark navy, brown and blacks as an overall colour scheme.

  7. Avoid overly saturated and bright colours like hot pink and bright yellow, muted colours photograph better.

  8. Lay out your family outfit choices on the floor or bed to see them all together and try on to check they all fit, well ahead of time.

  9. Consider the location of your session. if outside ensure that everyone will be warm enough or on rare occasions cool enough! Opt for casual footwear.

  10. If at home I always recommend loose, comfortable clothes, no shoes and avoid dark or bright socks if you prefer not to be barefoot.

Above all, you want to be comfortable and wear something representative of your style and character. So pick something you feel good in whether that’s your favourite pair of jeans or a beautiful dress.
